Psychotherapy

Our lives are our stories, and they have chapters, episodes, plot twists... You might be feeling your story is changing. Maybe you're ready to start again. Maybe you're too tired and scared to look at the next page.

Are you struggling with changes in your body, your relationships, your work life, your energy? Or, are you ready to change, ready to quit old habits or feelings but can’t make yourself follow through? Are you struggling to accept yourself as you are? Life is so often split between the things we don’t want to change but must and the things we want to be different but can’t change. Maybe you have been stuck on the same page in your life for too many years.  Maybe you've just experienced the whole plot unravelling.

Anxiety, depression, uncertainty, fear, regret, disappointment, guilt, grief. These can feel like you've ended up in the loneliest places possible. But while your experience is yours alone, you are not alone. Therapy is your space to tell your story, your time to be heard.

Your Psychotherapy sessions are meant to fit you. We practice using an integrated, made-for-you blend of techniques and approaches that best fit your personality, goals, and current situation. Some techniques frequently used are highlighted below:

  • Psychodynamic therapy, also known as insight-oriented therapy, evolved from Freudian psychoanalysis. Like adherents of psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapists believe that bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness promotes insight and resolves conflict. But psychodynamic therapy is briefer and less intensive than psychoanalysis and also focuses on the relationship between the therapist and the client, as a way to learn about how the client relates to everyone in their life.

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy stresses the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, cause our negative feelings. The therapist assists the client in identifying, testing the reality of, and correcting dysfunctional beliefs underlying his or her thinking. The therapist then helps the client modify those thoughts and the behaviours that flow from them. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often calls for homework assignments. CBT has been clinically proven to help clients in a relatively short amount of time with a wide range of disorders, including depression and anxiety.

  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal-focused therapeutic approach which incorporates positive psychology principles and practices. This helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems. The principles that guide strategic solution focused therapy can be summarized as a three-part theory: (1) What's the trouble? (2) If it works, do more of it, and (3) If it doesn't work, stop doing it. Do something different.

  • Within parts work therapy, you achieve trauma resolution by recognizing disowned parts and giving these parts a voice. The goal is to help you develop an embodied sense of self that can compassionately hold your emotions, vulnerable sensations, and young parts of self.

  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an action-oriented approach to psychotherapy that stems from traditional behavior therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Clients learn to stop avoiding, denying, and struggling with their inner emotions and, instead, accept that these deeper feelings are appropriate responses to certain situations that should not prevent them from moving forward in their lives. With this understanding, clients begin to accept their hardships and commit to making necessary changes in their behavior, regardless of what is going on in their lives and how they feel about it.

  • Walk and Talk therapy is just therapy while walking instead of therapy in an office setting! The counselling and psychotherapy component is the same with an added element of relaxation and (often) deeper ability to process the experience in a low pressure setting. Moving your body can release endorphins, leading to a great sense of calm following your sessions. The location of these walks are in neighbourhoods and parks decided upon by the client and therapist. While every measure is taken to keep conversations confidential is taken, we cannot guarantee total privacy in a public space.

What can therapy do?

You might be ready to try again. You might not have the strength yet. The world keeps turning while you are struggling and you just need someone to listen, help you slow it all down and breathe and figure out a plan. It could be your relationships, your stage of life, questions about who you are, acceptance, grace.

So what’s your story?

I would be honoured to work together with you and discover what comes next. Whatever brought you to this moment is just a comma, a pause. And what is hurting you now is what will help you write the next line. Every person, every story is welcome.

  • The answer to this differs for everyone. We offer short term problem focussed counselling that may only require a few sessions as well as ongoing mental health support. We will discuss your goals and your treatment plan with you as we work together.

  • We take your confidentiality and the laws around it seriously. Because of this, if we see each other out in the wild it will be up to you to decide if you want to say “hello” or keep our relationship private. We do not take it personally if you choose not to engage with us in a public space!

  • You can book with us directly without a referral by booking online, or by phone (613-305-1137) or email (hello@evergreenhealthcollective.com).

Most benefits insurers also do not require a doctor’s note or referral but it is always safest to check with your individual provider.

  • This may differ for everyone. But a good rule of thumb is when you feel your old ways of coping with life aren’t working anymore or something new has shaken the foundations of your life, it is a good time to reach out to a professional.

  • We do not do direct billing but upon payment we will print or email your receipt for you to submit to your insurance.

You should also save your receipts for tax time when anything not covered by extended health benefits may be claimable as medical expenses.

  • We get it, your friends are awesome and you trust them! But a psychotherapist has training to deal with a range of symptoms and situations, we have an objective outside perspective that those close to you may not have, and you never have to feel guilty taking up our time to talk things over (and over and over if needed!).
